VenaSeal Vein Treatment

VenaSeal is an innovative form of vein treatment that uses cyanoacrylate to close and seal varicose veins. Cyanoacrylate is a medical glue, used to effectively shut down the main saphenous vein located in the thigh. When the vein is glued shut, a process of hardening begins. The vein is closed and becomes scar tissue inside the body, but does not disappear. The blood inside the vein is absorbed and disappears, not the vein itself.

How Does VenaSeal Work?

VenaSeal Treatment involves placing a small amount of cyanoacrylate into a catheter. When the vein is closed, the blood is rerouted naturally through other healthy veins located nearby. Other treatment options may require a regional nerve block or anesthesia during the procedure. VenaSeal does not. It is not as invasive as other treatment options and doesn’t require you to have an immediate post-treatment plan that involves compression stockings or medication.

What Are Cyanoacrylates?

Cyanoacrylates have been used to repair skin incisions and wounds since the 1950s. It is often a go-to treatment for emergencies with lacerations, especially in children. It is a quick and easy solution that helps to avoid the need for sutures in many cases. The medical-grade glue has been used in various areas of medicine over the years, including:

  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Dental
  • Ophthalmic surgeries
  • Orthopedic care
  • Intravascular Occlusion of Cerebral Arterio-Venous Malformations or AVMs

What are the Advantages of VenaSeal?

There are several advantages to choosing VenaSeal over other forms of treatment for varicose veins.

  • There is minimal discomfort involved in the procedure. That’s because there is no need for injections or local anesthesia.
  • There is no need to wear compression socks or stockings afterward.
  • Minimal time off from work and patients may return back to their normal activities soon.
  • There is no admission to the hospital, or an outpatient center needed.
  • There is no chance of nerve damage or any thermal injuries with this procedure.

What to Expect Before and After the Procedure

There are a few things that you should keep in mind to prepare before your VenaSeal treatment.

  • Unless otherwise advised to do so, you should not stop taking any of your current medications before treatment.
  • Do not shave your legs immediately before the treatment.
  • Wear loose trousers or slacks for the appointment. And be sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes to walk in.
  • Medication before the treatment is generally not needed. If you have a low threshold for pain, you can take two ibuprofen tablets with food before the procedure.
  • Following the procedure, our medical assistant will give written post-treatment instructions with you in detail and provide post-care documents for you to refer back to.
  • You will need to go for a 10-minute walk immediately after the procedure and before you drive home. If you can walk without restriction, you will be free to go.
  • It is advised that you walk for at least 10 to 15 minutes per day following treatment.
  • You can go back to your usual activities, but you should not stand or sit for a long period. You can continue with normal exercise within 48 hours after treatment.
  • An ultrasound to check the treated veins will be scheduled a few weeks after the treatment. This will help assess the outcome of the procedure and check for any possible deep vein occlusion.
