Everything You Need to Know About the Norplant Birth Control Implant

Norplant is a type of long-acting, reversible birth control designed to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. Implanted just under the skin in the upper arm, it slowly releases a hormone called levonorgestrel—a form of progestin—to stop ovulation and prevent conception.

If you’re considering a long-term contraceptive option, here’s everything you need to know about how Norplant works, who it's recommended for, and what to expect in terms of effectiveness and side effects.

What Is Norplant?

The Norplant birth control implant is made up of six small, flexible silicone capsules, each containing 36 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone. These capsules are inserted subdermally (under the skin) in the upper arm using a specialized medical kit.

Once inserted, Norplant releases hormones steadily into the bloodstream, starting at around 85 mcg/day and gradually declining over time to about 30 mcg/day by the end of its 5-year usage window.

How Effective Is Norplant?

Norplant is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, with a failure rate of less than 1 pregnancy per 100 women per year. This makes it just as effective as surgical sterilization and more reliable than most IUDs and oral contraceptives.

Quick Fact: Norplant starts working within hours after insertion if placed within the first 7 days of your menstrual cycle.

Who Should Consider Norplant?

Norplant may be a good option if you:

  • Want long-term birth control without daily or monthly maintenance
  • Are not a candidate for estrogen-based contraceptives
  • Prefer a non-coital method of contraception
  • Want a reversible contraceptive method for future family planning
  • Are seeking an alternative to IUDs, the pill, or hormone injections

Possible Side Effects of Norplant

Serious Side Effects (seek medical help immediately):

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Pelvic pain or cramps
  • Missed or irregular periods
  • Sudden stop in menstruation

Common Side Effects:

  • Pain, itching, or infection at the implant site
  • Nausea, dizziness, or vomiting
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Anxiety, nervousness, or mood swings
  • Appetite changes or weight gain
  • Hair thinning or loss
  • Uterine enlargement

If you experience any persistent or bothersome symptoms, speak with your doctor.

Norplant Insertion and Dosage

All six capsules must be inserted at once by a trained healthcare provider during the first 7 days of your menstrual cycle. They are implanted just under the skin on the inner side of the upper arm, about 8 to 10 cm above the elbow.

The capsules are arranged in a fan-like pattern for proper distribution, which also makes eventual removal easier. After five years, the implants must be removed and can be replaced if continued protection is desired.

Interactions with Other Medications

Some medications may reduce Norplant's effectiveness, especially those used to treat seizures, such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, or rifampin. Always let your doctor know about any medications you are taking before starting Norplant.
