OB-GYN: Prepare for Your First Visit

Anytime you see a new doctor, you should come prepared with any questions and concerns you have. This is especially true for obstetrics and gynecologists. Whether it is your first ever visit to an OB-GYN or you just switched doctors, it is best to plan ahead. Here are some things to consider and ways to prepare as you get ready for your first appointment with a new gynecologist.

Take Charge of Your Personal Health

It can be awkward to talk to someone else about your personal health issues, but it is so important to do so. If you have anything specific you have noticed that you want an expert’s opinion on, your first visit to your new gynecologist is the perfect time to bring it up. Writing down what you want to discuss can help you remember and feel less nervous about the whole thing.

Even if there is no specific issue going on that you want to learn more about at the obstetrics and gynecologist, it is still good to ask questions. If you aren’t going to take your own health seriously, who is?

One thing you can ask a doctor who is new to you is what kinds of exams you need.  In general, women over 21 should get a yearly pelvic exam, and women over 40 should get an annual mammogram. These guidelines can vary depending on each person’s specific health needs, so start making a personalized health plan with your gynecologist from the first visit to make sure you get the best care possible. By the end of your appointment, have a plan for when you should return for another visit.

Find Out How the Obstetrics and Gynecologist Office Runs

Not every question you ask at a doctor’s appointment has to be specifically related to your own health. It is a good idea to learn more about the practice in general as well. Ask if you are guaranteed to see the same gynecologist at every visit or if a team of doctors rotates through patients. Many people are more comfortable going to the same specialist over time, so if that is the case for you, see if your local office can accommodate you.

You should also know things like the office’s hours and where to go if they are not available. While this information can most likely be found on their website, it can be nice to hear about it in person as well. Find out what tests are available at your obstetrics and gynecologist’s office, too. It’s nice to go to a clinic that has a wide variety of laboratory services, so you don’t have to schedule follow-up appointments at secondary locations anytime you need additional testing.

Trust Your Gut

Going to a new gynecologist or visiting an OB-GYN for the first time can be nerve-wracking. It is normal to feel a bit nervous and awkward at first. Preparing what you want to talk and ask about can help relieve that tension.

There is a difference between being nervous and feeling uncomfortable. If your new doctor makes you feel a little too worried, don’t feel obligated to stay at that practice going forward. Trust your gut. When you feel comfortable, you will have a better experience and get better healthcare. This can sometimes take a bit of time, so be patient even while you are aware of your initial reactions.
