Four Reasons Why Varicose Veins Are More Than a Cosmetic Issue
October 19, 2023

Treating varicose veins is typically done for cosmetic purposes. An example of this kind of care is cosmetic sclerotherapy. However, it is crucial to understand the potential seriousness of this condition to the veins and the rest of the body. Ulcers, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), skin infection, and blood clots are, to name a few, four reasons people should treat their varicose veins as soon as possible.

Ulcers

If your varicose veins become a severe case, you may be prone to developing skin ulcers. According to John Hopkins University School of Medicine, “Venous ulcers are leg ulcers caused by problems with blood flow (circulation) in your leg veins.”

Treatment for this condition can range from wearing compression socks to applying a skin dressing to the ulcer. Additionally, moving around and exercising are forms of preventative care. Avoiding smoking and elevating the feet can also help combat the formation of this disease.

DVT

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can also develop in the body when a person has varicose veins. It is a severe condition of blood clots that can occur in the leg. Mayo Clinic states that the blood clots can spread throughout your body, which is very dangerous because they can move to your lungs.

Symptoms of this disease include red or discolored skin on your legs. Other side effects include swelling and pain in the area with DVT. It is recommended that you schedule a consultation with your doctor if you notice signs of this condition.

DVT is also dangerous because it can lead to a life-threatening disease called pulmonary embolism (PE). PE is where blood clots are trapped in the lungs. You must seek emergency help if you have this disease.

Skin Infection

Cellulitis, a form of skin infection, can develop as a result of varicose veins. Blisters are also a side effect, along with other skin irregularities. Other symptoms of cellulitis include having a fever or chills. The CDC advises getting medical attention if this happens to treat the infection.

One study found that there were, as stated,  “14 million cases occurring in the United States annually” from cellulitis. These numbers show that this skin infection is a widespread issue that continues to impact many people. Because of this, it is crucial to know how to prevent and treat patients who suffer from this skin irregularity.

Taking antibiotics is a very effective method to combat cellulitis in the skin. Forms of preventative care include keeping the skin well-moisturized and taking care of the nails. Losing weight is also shown to reduce the chances of developing cellulitis.

Blood Clots

According to the National Blood Clot Alliance, “Superficial clots that can occur with varicose veins can cause leg swelling, redness, pain, and tenderness in the affected limb or around the affected vein.” In other words, varicose veins can provide significant levels of discomfort and must be treated.

People with blood clots in the veins may develop thrombophlebitis, a condition in which inflammation occurs in the affected area of the body. One way to care for this ailment is through exercising. Other self-care methods include applying heparinoid cream to the skin, wearing compression stockings, and using anti-inflammatory creams or gels. Additionally, it is worth noting that varicose veins can also produce phlebitis and superficial venous thrombosis.
