What Are Natural Remedies for Spider Veins and Do They Work?
October 19, 2023

As a person ages, the veins in their arms and legs become more visible due to the constant circulation of blood. Severe conditions in which the veins are swollen and press against the skin are referred to as varicose veins. However, spider veins is the term for more mild conditions. With spider veins, you may notice small, hardly visible clusters of red, blue, and purple veins under the skin. While this condition may seem scary at first, spider veins are usually only cosmetic and thus do not require medical attention.

Even though spider veins on legs do not cause any physical symptoms, they can indeed contribute to feelings of anxiety and insecurity due to their appearance. In order to help you feel good in your skin and regain your confidence, we at BASS Vein Center are exploring the natural remedies for resolving spider veins.

What is the Cause of Spider Veins?

Spider veins are the less noticable and severe form of varicose veins. Both conditions result from damaged veins and valves located throughout the body. Though spider veins can occur in any part of the circulatory system, they are most commonly seen in the veins closest to the surface of the skin, such as the hands, arms, feet, and legs.

Essentially, when the veins closest to the skin wear out over time due to natural processes or disease, the blood is not able to flow back to the heart. Rather, the blood in your veins becomes trapped and results in the “spider-like” appearance from which the condition derives its name.

While most cases of spider veins are due to aging, the following factors may indicate an increased risk for developing the condition:

  • Sex- Women are more likly to develope spider veins due to hormonal imbalances caused by menopause. Furthermore, hormone treatments like contraceptives could worsen symptoms.
  • Family History- If you have a family history of spider veins, you have an increased chance of developing the condition at some point in your lifetime.
  • Pregnancy- During pregnancy, the breasts swell and veins become more noticeable. In addition to the increased amount of veins in the breasts, pregnant women may notice swollen veins in their legs due to changes in hormones.
  • Obesity- When a person is severely overweight, they risk the development of spider veins in their legs. As opposed to age-related spider veins, individuals with obesity develop the condition as a result of increased pressure on the bottom half of the legs.
  • Long Periods of Sitting and Standing- Furthermore, if you work a job where you are required to sit or stand for long periods of time, you may notice the appearance of spider veins at an earlier age.
