What Are The Long-Term Side Effects of Vein Ablation?
October 19, 2023

For many people, varicose veins are a source of anxiety, embarrassment, and insecurity. Though, in most instances, varicose veins are completely harmless, the psychological effects caused by the aesthetics of the condition can significantly decrease one’s quality of life. In an attempt to improve the appearance of varicose veins, some people undergo a procedure called vein ablation.

Essentially, vein ablation involves cauterizing, or burning, the affected veins in order to shut off the blood supply, reduce swelling and pain, and ultimately resolve the appearance of varicose veins. However, the procedure has been known to produce long-term side effects in patients, some of which are much worse than the initial cosmetic issue.

If you are considering undergoing vein ablation surgery, we at BASS Vein Center want you to know the procedure’s negative side effects in order to make the best decision possible.

Keep reading to learn about the long-term effects of vein ablation and whether the procedure is right for you!

Worse Pain After Radiofrequency Ablation? This is Why!

Although radiofrequency ablation is an effective means of removing varicose veins, the procedure comes with some downsides as well. One of the negative side effects of undergoing radiofrequency ablation is the severe pain that many patients experience.

When an individual receives vein ablation, the operating surgeon essentially burns and damages the vein so that it develops scar tissue. The scar tissue closes the vein and thus cuts off the blood supply that causes the appearance of varicose veins. Due to burning the vein, patients often experience significant pain during and immediately following surgery. This pain is described as burning, prickling, and stinging, and can last well after leaving the operating room.

Potential Side Effects of Vein Ablation

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are commonly used procedures for addressing varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. While these treatments are generally safe and effective, there are some important long-term considerations to be aware of:

  • Recurrence of Varicose Veins: Vein ablation procedures are designed to close or remove damaged veins. However, there's a chance that new varicose veins may develop over time, or the treated vein might reopen, leading to a return of symptoms. This is something to keep in mind for long-term results.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Some patients may experience temporary numbness or tingling in the treated leg, especially around the incision sites or along the treated vein. Fortunately, this sensation often improves over time.
  • Skin Discoloration: Skin discoloration, known as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, can develop around the treated area. In some cases, this discoloration can be permanent.
  • Scarring: Although the incisions made during these procedures are usually small and minimally invasive, some scarring at the site is possible. Typically, these scars are small and not very noticeable.
  • Phlebitis: Inflammation of the treated vein, called phlebitis, can occur, causing discomfort. In some cases, it may require treatment.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Although rare, there's a slight risk of developing symptoms of deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in a deep vein) following vein ablation procedures. The risk is higher in patients with certain pre-existing conditions or risk factors.
  • Infection: Infection is a rare complication but can happen at the incision sites. Adequate post-procedure care and hygiene measures can significantly reduce this risk.
  • Allergic Reactions: In rare instances, patients may experience allergic reactions to the local anesthetic or other medications used during the procedure.
  • Skin Burns: In very rare cases, thermal injuries or skin burns can occur during the procedure if the heat generated by the laser or radiofrequency catheter affects surrounding tissues. It's crucial for healthcare providers to use proper techniques and equipment to prevent this complication.

Is Vein Ablation Worth It?

Whether vein ablation is worth it depends on your individual circumstances and the severity of your vein-related issues. Vein ablation procedures like endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) can offer significant benefits for many individuals, providing relief from the symptoms of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Here are some points to consider:

  • Symptom Relief: Vein ablation is highly effective at relieving the symptoms associated with varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. These symptoms often include pain, swelling, aching, and discomfort in the legs. Many patients experience a notable improvement in their quality of life after these procedures.
  • Improved Appearance: Varicose veins can be unsightly and may cause self-esteem issues for some individuals. Vein ablation can lead to the cosmetic improvement of the legs, which can boost self-confidence and overall well-being.
  • Minimally Invasive: Vein ablation procedures are minimally invasive and typically performed on an outpatient basis. They involve small incisions and require only local anesthesia, which means less pain and a shorter recovery period compared to traditional vein-stripping surgery.
  • Quick Recovery: Most patients can return to their regular activities relatively quickly after vein ablation, often within a day or two. There's minimal downtime associated with these procedures.
  • Low Risk of Side Effects: While there are potential side effects and complications, they are relatively rare. Many individuals do not experience significant long-term side effects from vein ablation. The majority of patients find the benefits far outweigh any potential risks.
  • Alternative to Surgery: Vein ablation offers a less invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping surgery, which can be more painful and require a longer recovery time.
  • Long-Term Results: Vein ablation procedures often provide long-lasting relief. While there's a chance of vein recurrence or new varicose veins developing, many patients enjoy several years or more of symptom relief.

It's important to remember that the decision to undergo vein ablation should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider who can assess your specific condition and discuss the potential benefits and risks. Not everyone with varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency may require or benefit from these procedures. Your healthcare provider can help determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your individual needs.

BASS Vein Center

Essentially, radiofrequency vein ablation is a procedure used to treat and improve the appearance of varicose veins. Though vein ablation can in fact produce positive results in that the varicose veins disappear, the accompanying long-term side effects may overshadow the operation's success. Thus, you should discuss your options with your physician before coming to a final decision.
